Sumo’s 2019 research found that the top-performing pop-ups convert at 9.3%. Besides, there are different types of pop-ups, and you can use them in multiple ways, depending on your use case and trigger.

While most people say that they find pop-ups annoying, users’ actions contradict and prove the effectiveness of pop-ups. 

Don’t get me wrong; there are erroneous ways to create pop-ups that are annoying to users. Plus, many factors go into creating a successful pop-up which can tank because of one error.

1. The average pop-up conversion rate is over 10%


According to Optimonk, the average pop-up conversion rate is 11.09%. However, it depends on the type of pop-up, as email pop-ups convert less than exit-intent pop-ups.

2. Mobile Pop-ups drive more engagement than desktop


Mobile pop-ups engage over 40% better than desktop pop-ups. 

Drip’s research showed that mobile pop-ups (5.3%) had higher conversion rates than desktops (3.11%).

This is further proven by the results from Getsitecontrol that showed mobile devices had a 10% average click- through rate compared to desktops (7.09%).

Why do pop-ups do better on mobile devices, you may ask? 

I believe it’s because mobile users have increased over the past year, and most mobile visitors are more engaged with their devices than desktop visitors.

3. Adding Images to Pop-ups can increase the click-through rate by over 25%


Images are important in all aspects of marketing, and adding images to your pop-ups can
increase conversions. 

Reports show that pop-ups with images (3.8%) convert better than those without (2.07%). This is because pop-up images keep visitors engaged, making the pop-ups more persuasive than intrusive.

However, some marketers believe that the difference between the conversion rates of pop-ups with images and those without is insignificant – meaning you can choose not to add images to your pop-ups. 

I believe in the trial and error method – so if you add images and your conversion rates increase, you can keep doing that, and if the difference is insignificant, you can skip this step.

4. Pop-ups with images can increase email signups by 63%


As images increase click-through rates, they also increase the number of email signups by over 60%. 

The reports show that adding images converts more than 4% of visitors, while pop-ups with no images convert just about 2%. 

You should use customer or product images when choosing your pop-up images to add a personal touch to them.

Visitors like to be in control of their choices when they visit any website. So, you must add an opt-out button to your pop-ups without making your visitors search for it. It is always a good idea to make your opt-out choice less desirable for your visitors. 

For example, you can add an opt-in choice to make them consider the cost of closing and rejecting the pop-up. 

This way, the conversion rate will increase by over 14%.

10. Pop-ups with context convert better than those without


Context is important as it is what gives your message meaning. 

Even if your content is the best and your context is wrong, your pop-up will not have high conversion rates. This is why you need to ensure that pop-ups are relevant to the information on the page surrounding them. 

For example, it is better to offer a discount coupon while the visitor is browsing to further incentivise them to convert to customers than offering it after checkout.

11. Pop-ups with lead magnets increase signup rates by over 100%

Research shows that pop-ups with lead magnets converted 7.73% of visitors on mobile and 4.7% on desktop. 

Compared to 3.83 on mobile and 1.84% on desktops without lead magnets, this is over a 100% increase.

Pop-ups with contextual and inherent value will increase your conversion rate. You can offer inherent value by providing incentives like eBooks, courses, infographics, videos, and others in exchange for signing up for your mailing list.

13. Pop-ups with countdown timers generate more conversions


No one likes to miss out on offers. 

So, you can use the power of urgency and scarcity through countdown timers to increase your conversion rates. You can also use limited-time offers and promotions to make visitors take action.

Research proves the effectiveness of countdown times as pop-ups with them converted better (8.07%) than those without them (3.7%). 

Also, according to Optimonk, the average pop-up conversion rate with a countdown timer I over 14%.

14. Pop-ups with fewer input fields have a higher conversion rate than those with more input fields


You can increase the conversion rate of your pop-ups by reducing the number of input fields.

Research showed that the lower the input fields, the higher the conversion rates. The results showed the pop-ups with five input fields had the lowest conversion rate (0.81%), while those with two input fields had the highest (3.31%). 

Additionally, pop-ups with four, three, and one input fields had 0.90%, 1.08%, and 3.2%, respectively.

15. Clear and concise pop-up headlines increase conversion rates


Unclear headlines reduce conversion rates quickly. 

You need to be direct with your wording if you want your pop-up to work. Customers need to know what they’ll get in exchange, so blanket statements will not work here.

16. Delaying pop-ups for at least five seconds generates more conversions


It is best to delay your pop-up until your visitors have spent some time on your website. You should use time triggers, but you must ensure you choose the right time.

Research shows that pop-ups after 8 seconds convert better (34.57%) than those shown before or after.

This timing is not absolute, as you can factor in the average time spent on your site when
choosing the right pop-up delay time. But I recommend waiting over 5 seconds.

17. Using a scroll trigger converts higher than a timed trigger


Instead of a time trigger, a scroll trigger is a good alternative as it allows you to show the pop- up when visitors have scrolled down the webpage. 

However, it can be just as hard to choose a trigger point. Drip’s research reported that pop-ups shown after a visitor has scrolled 35% of the page convert better. 

Besides, you should use 10 to 50% as your benchmark range.

18. Exit-intent pop-ups can save more than 10% of abandoning visitors


Exit-intent pop-ups can help you stop potential customers from leaving your website. But to do this, you need a valuable offer that the customer cannot help but take advantage of. 

This last-minute offer is your last-ditch effort to increase your conversion rates and sales. 

Besides, research proves that by offering discounts and coupons, you can convert over 5% of
abandoning visitors.
