What is Fiverr?
Fiverr is simply a marketplace where freelancers and experts can offer their services.
The company was founded in 2010 with one goal, to create an online platform where Freelancers and industry experts can promote their services. Today on the site you can find millions of freelancers offering their services to private clients, companies and agencies.
On Fiverr a project is called a “gig”, many freelancers start off offering their services from $ 5 and up. Hence the name of the site, Fiverr in fact. Obviously, we are not limited to this amount, Fiverr allows you to request any amount for our services, in fact, most of the experienced freelancers offer services between $100 - $10,000 per project. Yes, you have read that right, I heard of a seller making $10,000 from a single sale.
That said, the most popular types of projects on Fiverr are:
Writing and translations
Animation and video production
Music and audio services
Is Fiverr legit?
Yeah, for both buyers and sellers, Fiverr is a legit website. There are some "hustlers" from Fiverr that may try to take advantage of your service or sell you a service that might not be of the same standard as advertised. The customers, however, can still review the order and report whether or not it meets the requirements.
It has a customer service that will help you solve any problem at all times and will reply within 24 hours of submitting a ticket. So customer support is actually fantastic.
You can either extend the delivery time or get a refund (partial or full) immediately if a retailer fails to deliver your order on time.
The transactions are all properly documented.
Fiverr also provides a simple way to find freelancer sellers of quality - you can see their ranking, level and read other buyers' reviews.
A verification procedure for sellers has recently been implemented by Fiverr, and you can see if they have passed it. This makes finding a professional seller so much easier.
Plus, there is another method of verification in which sellers provide information about their education and history.
How does Fiverr work?
If you have a particular talent, on Fiverr you can earn by doing work for customers (buyers) who sign up to the site to complete/create projects.
Working on Fiverr is very simple, but first, you need to understand the difference between the two types of site users.
Seller (Freelance/seller): if you work on your own and are looking for a job, you can open a freelance profile on Fiverr, create your offers and make yourself available to customers. Read more on how to get clients on Fiverr.
Buyer (client/buyer): if you are looking for professionals who can help you complete a project, Fiverr allows you to open a buyer profile and request the services of the freelancer who convinces you the most.
Fiverr offers both types of users the ability to communicate via their messaging system. Buyers and freelancers must always agree on the type, duration and purpose of the project.
Now that you know how Fiverr works, it's time to set up your profile and let your customers find you!
Become a seller on Fiverr
You want to make some money on the side without dedicating too much time and you have been told to go on Fiverr, open an account and start selling your services.
Wrong, it's not so simple.
Working with Fiverr is very simple, by following the steps below you will be able to start offering your services immediately. However, working on Fiverr is not so simple.
Open a Freelancer profile
To become a seller on Fiverr and start offering your services, you must have a seller profile. So the first step is to register via this link. Once you have entered your contact information you will receive an email with a verification link. After confirming your email address, your account will be verified and you can start offering your services immediately.
Become a seller on Fiverr
Your profile is the most important thing, clients choose freelancers based on their profile, so the best thing to do is to complete your profile by entering as much information as possible.
Once you have created your profile, you can move on to creating your "gigs", that is the type of projects and services you intend to offer. A gig usually contains all the information about the service you are offering, a title, a description and a list of everything that is included in the service.
Let's start working!
That's when things get tough for sellers.
Even if you could simply wait for a customer to find you, the best strategy at least initially is to search directly for requests for offers published by potential customers. A request usually includes the type of service desired, the time to do the work and how much the customer is willing to spend (budget).
As a freelance seller, you can search through these requests, choose the ones that suit you, and contact potential customers by sending a message with your offer.
How much does Fiverr cost?
Creating a freelancer account on Fiverr is completely free! This is probably the best thing that Fiverr offers, it will cost you nothing to open your profile and search through the thousands of job applications on the site.
As a customer, however, you will pay Fiverr the amount (budget) for your project plus compensation for the service. The rate varies depending on the budget you establish. For projects under $ 40, the fee is $ 2, while for projects over $ 40, the fee is 5%.
As a freelancer, you should know that Fiverr will keep 20% per cent of your earnings. For example, if you earn $ 100 for a gig, Fiver will pay you $ 80 and keep $20 as the service fee.
How to make money with Fiverr: the 11 highest paid services
As we have seen before, Fiverr allows practically any type of service, in fact, there are more than 200 categories and sub-categories of services on the site! Below we see which are the best 10 in terms of the number of requests and earning possibilities.

2- Web Design

On Fiverr, graphic services are in great demand. It is in fact one of the most popular categories with over 11,000 gigs available.
Whatever your specialization, logo design, graphics for printing, drawing, t-shirts etc .. Surely you won't have too much trouble finding a job on Fiverr.
Earnings (average) between $ 50 and $ 2,000 per project
Obviously, it is not necessary to be a designer or a programmer to work on Fiverr. In fact, it is possible to make good money even with more traditional services such as the creation or revision of texts.
There are quite a few projects available for those who work in the field of copywriting and if this is your speciality, it is definitely worth searching through the various requests on the site which vary from blog articles, review of e-books, product reviews etc ...

The demand for social marketing specialists is constantly growing. Depending on your experience, it is possible to earn with occasional projects or even receive offers for shorter or longer projects as consultants for companies and agencies.

If you have one or more social profiles with a good number of followers, at least 10,000 users, selling sponsored spaces and posts can be a good alternative to earn good money without doing too much!
The price that you can ask for or that will be offered to you depends on the number of your followers and the market niche you are going to cover. Profiles specializing in markets with a high probability of sales such as travel, health and wellness, sports and online work are among the most sought after.
9- Speakers and dubbing
Earnings (average) between $ 50 and $ 500 per project
Selling your voice for advertising or as a narrator for educational and informative videos is a good way to cash in quickly on Fiverr.
There are many projects in this category and a lot depends on the language you speak, English with an American accent and British are among the most requested (obviously), but there is a good assortment also for South American Spanish, Arabic and languages Asians such as Indian and Chinese.
Earnings (average) between $ 30 and $ 300 per project
Unlike web design, illustrations does not have the same magnitude of requests, however, if you are a good designer there are several possibilities, especially for the illustration of children's books, goliardic caricatures and the animation of informative videos.
11- Virtual Assistant and data processing
Earnings (average) between $ 5 and $ 100 per project
Becoming a virtual assistant or participating in data entry and processing projects is not very difficult, all you need is a computer with an office package, a good internet connection and a communication program such as Skype or Google Hangouts.
This type of work may seem boring and certainly not very creative, however, it does not require special skills and on Fiverr there is an almost infinite demand for this type of project, some can even turn into long-term collaborations.
How to sell more on Fiverr
Given that Fiverr is one of the major sites where to look for work online, the number of freelancers and therefore consequently the competition present is very high. To be able to grab a good number of projects and use Fiverr as your main source of income it is necessary to commit yourself, spend a lot of time on the platform and follow the steps you find below.
Have a good profile
It seems superfluous to say but having a good profile, full of information and complete in all its parts, is certainly one of the main factors to be found and to attract customers on Fiverr.
One thing that can give you a certain advantage is certainly the addition of a presentation video, both on the profile and on the individual gigs, you will create. In fact, a study of thousands of sample freelancers has shown that the chances of success increase by 200% when using a video as a presentation medium.
SEO, or optimization for search engines, is certainly one of the essential components for a winning Fiverr profile. Knowing how to optimize your profile by following all the basic and advanced tactics for good SEO is one of the main ways to stand out from the "crowd" of freelancers on the site and to be found by customers who do research even outside the platform.
Some basic tips are:
Optimize the titles and descriptions of your gigs to reflect as much as possible what you are selling.
Using specific keywords in your profile and in the description of your projects helps a lot to be found
Don't forget to also describe the images you will use to accompany your gigs
Download and use the Fiverr App
If you work on the go, you will not always have the opportunity to rely on your laptop, in this case having the Fiverr app installed on your smartphone will allow you to search for jobs, check your messages and respond to customers. After all, customer service is one of the key components to achieving good success on Fiverr.
Upsell, that is, the art of offering more ...
Even if you are offering gigs for $ 5-10, nobody is stopping you from enriching your offering with additional services. In fact, on Fiverr it is possible to add extra services such as fast delivery or the extension of the services offered, adding a surcharge to the initial cost of your service.
For example, if you offer a custom logo creation service, say for $ 50, you can offer 3 additional trials for $ 100 and maybe the creation of an entire brand-guide for $ 200.
Always try to aim for 5 stars
Offering impeccable service, excellent quality and fast and continuous communication are the secrets to obtaining a 5-star rating on Fiverr. If your customers are satisfied with your work, they can leave you a 5-star review with a lot of commentaries, enticing your next potential customers to choose your services.
Remember to always be polite in all communications and try to be professional, even with those slightly more difficult and demanding customers, in this way to avoid bad reviews that could damage your reputation and undermine your chance to earn.
Reach the top level as a freelancer
Initially, on Fiverr your profile will be presented as a “new seller”. By completing as many jobs as possible, while maintaining positive reviews, you will gradually become a “top-rated seller”. This will be marked on your profile with a special badge, you will have access to VIP support and the opportunity to be chosen for special promotions by Fiverr.
Disadvantages of being a Fiverr seller
It seems easy to be a Fiverr seller, but this platform is giving sellers the freedom to abuse, cheat and blackmail other sellers.
Let me tell you about a bad experience that happened to me recently.
How a competitive seller lowered my delivery rate from 100% to 90% in 1 day.
I got an order of $750 to deliver my backlinks gig to an Italian company. Since the work is quite substantial and I didn't have time to deliver it on my own, I was ready to sub-contract part of it to get some help from other Fiverr sellers.
So I started to chat to find out who can help me deliver it and funny enough, I met a seller who started to complain to me about the fact that the same client that ordered from me, didn't order from him.
He told the client contacted him for a quote but then decided to buy from me instead of him.
I have reached out to this seller to ask how much is he charging to deliver X amount of backlinks. The deal didn't go through because this guy didn't get the order form my client.
I have blackout the name of the seller as the issue is still pending with Fiverr support.
I guess this seller started to feel jealous because he didn't get the order from the client and I did.
A few days later, things have gotten a little weird.
I received an order cancellation.
I was so surprised and disappointed, as I was working to deliver this order but the client decided to cancel it. So I have reached out to the client to find out why he has cancelled, without consulting with me first.
He replied that he wanted me to deliver the order, but when he found out I sub-contract, he suddenly thought I wasn't able to deliver it.
At this point, I have made the connection. Who else who have told my client that I was sub-contracting? nobody knew but this seller, he was the only one I told about.
This is when this seller overstepped the boundaries of good business on Fiverr, went back to my client, told him I was subcontracting and he sold the client his gig for cheaper.
Welcome to the Fiverr support team
The next day, I have reached out to Fiverr to complain about this and explain that the seller provided false information to my client and tricked my client into cancelling my order.
But this is what Fiverr replied:
"This can be taken as a misrepresentation of the work provided"
This means that the buyer can, *at any time* during the project, cancel without providing any possible explanation whatsoever, 1 day or 20 days into the project and the seller won't get paid AT ALL! Regardless of the job you have already done, you'll earn $0, nada.
A few days later, while I was arguing with Fiverr support that I was able to deliver the order, my former client bough the same gig from the seller who just went behind my back.
Of course, it wasn't about the money, it was about trying to get protection from Fiverr for this sick behaviour buyers and sellers are allowed to do on the platform.
I have tried many times to reach out to Fiverr again and explain what happened, but they have ignored me.
So in the end, this is what I have learnt by being a Pro Seller:
It looked like I wasn't able to deliver the order, the reason was never explained to me
There are sharks on Fiverr trying to steal clients from you, don't EVER sub-contract, don't do my mistake
Fiverr's system for rating sellers is automatic, which means when an order is cancelled, humans can't reverse it so when your stats will go down, whether it's your fault or it isn't, not even Fiverr support staff can change that.
Fiverr doesn't protect sellers, it built a system to protect buyers.
Looking at the evidence, it’s obvious to me that Fiverr is well aware of what’s going on, yet is still willing to sit back and let it happen.
I hope that soon Fiverr will try to fix this issue and protect buyers better.
It’s not right that someone can put all that time and effort into building up an account and over-delivering, trying to deliver a gig only to be shot down by the very people you rely on to protect you.
I will not abandon Fiverr, I'll continue to be a seller there. I don’t want to be telling people to avoid Fiverr.
But after everything that has happened, Fiverr hasn't left me any choice.
Buying on Fiverr
Fiverr has made it very easy for individuals to buy gigs. This is what Fiverr does best.
You have all the requisite details and you get your order shipped within just a couple of days (sometimes even less). It sounds pretty basic, huh? But take your time and read what I have to say before you go and put an order, as Fiverr may not always be as good as it seems.
In my view, Fiverr is a platform with a bad reputation, primarily due to its weak rating system. If you don't want to repeat my mistakes and waste your time and money on sellers offering lousy service, then keep reading as I'm going to discuss how to avoid getting a bad experience with Fiverr.
It's very difficult to buy a great Fiverr gig cheaply since there are very few high-quality services that cost $5. However, there are a few cases where you can potentially buy a $5 gig:
The seller is new and offers his services at a low price in order to raise the gig's ranking and gain feedback from the customers. The price would inevitably rise.
The seller lives in a third world country, and there's a lot of money out there for $5. That doesn't mean that all the sellers from these countries are doing a fantastic job (in many cases, they do not).
The gig is quick and takes no effort (a seller is usually using some sort of software). Despite promises, these kinds of gigs can harm your business.
Fiverr is packed with fake reviews
I don't know exactly how it works, but that's true. And a lot of people (including myself) fell into a trap pit and ordered services from vendors who had a 5-star rating but ended up with lousy service.
Many people prefer to leave a 5-star rating even though the quality of work is bad as long as it is "as advertised". And many people leave the 5-stars review because the price was actually very low and they felt they made a good deal based on price, so the review was based on that rather than the quality of the service.
I also see this in SEO when I buy backlinks types of gigs. Many of the new Fiverr buyers are not SEO experts, so they rely on the experience of the seller, which is often very bad (i.e. sellers often focus on creating links rather than giving an actual benefit to the website).
Do not buy backlinks on Fiverr
Some experts SEOs say that buying backlinks, in general, is a pretty bad idea because it's against Google's terms of service. But that doesn't mean Google will ever find out, all deals are made under the table and money is exchanged by from bank account to bank account. There is no way Google ever can ever find out.
That's why that practice typically doesn't discourage anyone. If you are an SEO expert who is familiar with the latest search engine algorithm changes, you can request a sample of the vendor's previous work. Then, after an assessment, you determine if it's a good idea to purchase this kind of connection for your niche.
I understand that it's tempting to do so, particularly if you see that your competitors are using low-quality backlinks and rankings on Google's first page, but they can sometimes do more harm than good to your company.
Buying traffic on Fiverr
It’s definitely not a great idea to buy traffic on Fiverr. Fake traffic won’t do much to your ranking and may even hurt your position in SERP. That kind of traffic won’t bring any sales since it’s all bot traffic.
Buying SEO on Fiverr Pro
If you want to buy backlinks and traffic in the form of SEO managed services on Fiverr, make sure you head to Fiverr Pro. The prices are much more expensive and typically start from $500/month for a small SEO service, but all those sellers are either vetted freelancers or well-oiled SEO agencies. In other words, people you can trust.
The Pros and Cons of Fiverr
As with all marketplaces, Fiverr in addition to offering you the opportunity to make money from home, or while travelling, has its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of Fiverr
Freedom: Fiverr allows you to work on your own, at your own pace and from anywhere in the world (as long as you have a good internet connection).
Secure payments: since all customers have to deposit the requested money in advance if your service is flawless and you respect the terms of the agreement, getting paid on Fiverr is quite safe and immediate.
Possibility to receive tips: On Fiverr customers always have the possibility to add economic bonuses for the seller, this always provided that the service received is excellent. Therefore, sometimes committing even beyond the agreed level of service is certainly a good thing and very often you will be awarded a bonus that normally is between 10 and 20% more.
Fiverr is great for beginners: If you are taking your first steps into the world of freelancing, Fiverr is a great platform to gain experience. You will have a very large number of customers ready to buy your services and you will be able to begin to know all the dynamics behind maintaining your own business, on a secure platform where (at least) payments are guaranteed!
Disadvantages of Fiverr
Obviously, all this service from Fiverr comes at a cost, the commission that Fiverr will keep on your work is quite substantial, 20% commission of whatever you earn. It is therefore advisable to take this into consideration when creating your gigs and assigning a cost to your services.
Furthermore, given the low barrier of entry on the platform, Fiverr also has very high competition, especially in categories such as graphics and web design, this means that unless you are a superstar, with a great experience and an excellent portfolio, initially you will have to work a little to be found and to be chosen by customers.
With regards to price, at first, you may be forced to keep a low profile in order to stand out from the competition and earn the coveted 5 stars.
With regards to customer service, they tend to reply to enquiries with templated answers. Let me tell you an example.
I have recently asked to Fiverr's customer service why my payment on the mobile app shows different numbers than in my desktop account. I have made $400 in one sale, but on the Fiverr app, it was showing $386.
Here is their answer:
How is that going to help me?
An engineering mistake?
So the story continued with more back and forth replies between me and Fiverr customer service. Long story short, the problem is still there after 2 weeks of email exchange and I will continue to insist for a solution.
Choose Fiverr Pro
Fiverr gigs that are not Pro are of very bad quality, do not try to save money buying services that are typically expensive such as web development or SEO, because, for how tempting this might seem, the outcomes are 99% of the times negative for you.
There are other alternatives to Fiverr and the most popular one is UpWork. I have written an extensive guide on whether you should choose Fiverr vs Upwork.
